Freezes In Southern Parana, Brazil This Morning

Kansas City, June 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Pre-dawn temperatures this morning in southern Brazil were below freezing in southern grain areas. Some negative impact may result in minor corn production areas. Temporary damage was suspected in wheat production areas. In the meantime, coffee, 
citrus and sugarcane should not have been adversely impacted based on the pre-dawn temperatures noted below.
Temperatures were below freezing just shortly before dawn today in southern Parana Brazil. The region produces some corn and wheat with the graphics below indicating where those production areas are located. Most of the important second season corn production areas in in Parana are further to the west and north of where the coldest conditions occurred this morning, but that does not suggest there was no damage. Some of the minor production areas in the south did see pre-dawn temperatures in the range of -5 to zero Celsius or 23 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Assessing any damage will not be possible for several days, but there will likely be some impact. World Weather, Inc. believes much of the crop should have been far enough advanced to minimize the impact of freezes. However, recent persistent rain delayed the maturation process and has left the corn crop with high levels of moisture and that may not bode well for crop quality in those areas that experienced the coldest conditions for the longest period of time.
Most of the freezes stayed south of coffee, citrus, sugarcane and other freeze sensitive crops, although official low temperatures were not available at the time of this report.
Most of the winter wheat produced in southern Brazil was included in the frost and freeze impacted region this morning. However, winter wheat is not far enough advanced to have been seriously impacted other than the burning back of recent vegetative growth.
Coffee, citrus and sugarcane production areas were all far enough north to not have been bothered by freezes this morning – at least based on this pre-dawn data.
Temperatures will remain mild to cool through the weekend with the next shot of coldest air expected over southern Brazil Sunday and Monday mornings when similar to slightly colder temperatures are expected.
