Tropical Depression Eight To Skirt North Carolina

Kansas City, August 29 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical depression Eight remained on target for bringing rain and wind to the Outer Banks of North Carolina Tuesday and early Wednesday. The storm may not reach land, but it will be close enough that a tropical storm watch has been issued for the region due to the fact that the storm will intensify somewhat over the next two days and will turn to the north and northeast just before moving over the Outer Banks. The storm will bring heavy rain inland to eastern North Carolina, but no more than brief heavy rain is expected in crop areas.
At 0500 EDT today the center of the storm was located 270 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina at 32.6 north, 73.0 west moving west northwesterly at 10 mph. The storm was producing a maximum sustained wind speed of 35 mph and an Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft was flying into the system shortly before dawn today to get a new assessment of the storm’s development overnight.
Some intensification of the storm will occur over the next two days as the system moves closer to land, but a turn to the north and then to the northeast is expected just in time to prevent landfall. Rain will vary from 1.00 to 3.00 inches with some potential for 5.00 inches if the storm comes closer to land than expected. Once the storm turns to the north northeast it will move back out to sea without any further threat to the United States.
