Tropical Disturbance To Produce Heavy Rain Far Eastern India

Kansas City, November 3 (World Weather Inc.) – A tropical disturbance over the Bay of Bengal today was expected to drift west northwesterly toward the upper Odisha/West Bengal/Bangladesh coastal region of eastern India today and Friday. The disturbance will shift more to the northeast Friday before making landfall during the weekend over Bangladesh. Remnants of the storm will move into India’s far Eastern States where some
moderate to heavy rain is expected. Bangladesh, however, will likely feel the greatest effects from the storm. Some rice damage is possible, but the storm is not expected to become intense enough for serious losses to agriculture or personal property.
At 0500 GMT, the center of the tropical disturbance over the Bay of Bengal was located near 13.3 north, 86.1 east, or 310 miles south southeast of Visakhapatnam, India. Movement was westerly at 12 mph. Maximum sustained surface wind speeds were estimated to range from 25 to 30 mph.
The disturbance is expected to strengthen into a tropical cyclone during the next 12 to 24 hours while tracking west-northwesterly across the Bay of Bengal. However, this system will not become a significantly strong tropical cyclone through the end of the weekend.
Outer rain bands from the disturbance will begin producing rain for areas near and along the Odisha coastline Thursday. Rain will spread into southern West Bengal Friday as the disturbance begins to drift northeasterly. Heavy rain will then shift into southern Bangladesh and portions of India’s far Eastern States this weekend as the system makes landfall over the region. Once making landfall, the tropical disturbance will rapidly dissipate. Much of the precipitation will come to an end by Monday morning.
Rain totals for areas near and along the Odisha and West Bengal coastline into southern Bangladesh and portions of the Eastern States will range from 2.00 to 7.00 inches with local amounts of 10.00 inches or more for areas along the Indian coast. Flooding will be possible and could damage some of the region’s rice. Sugarcane will be impacted, as well, but the impact on crops is not likely to be very substantial unless wind speeds get above 50 mph, which is possible, but not necessarily probable at this point in time.
