Frost, Light Freezes In Southeast Brazil This Morning

Kansas City, April 28 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and light freezes occurred as expected this morning in southeastern Brazil. The area impacted was from southernmost Parana across the interior three fourths of Santa Catarina to northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. Damage to some immature crops in the region was considered possible, although the impact was not suspected of being tremendous. The cool air will moderate somewhat tonight with Saturday morning still cool enough for some frost in virtually the same region. The cool pocket will begin to dissipate Sunday.
Near dawn temperatures this morning were in the range of zero to 4 degrees Celsius across the region from northeastern Rio Grande do Sul to south-central and interior southeastern Parana. A few temperatures just slightly below freezing were expected when the official low temperatures come in, but the graphic above is the best illustration of the coolness that has occurred. The region is not a rich grain, oilseed or sugarcane production region, but some crops are produced in the area. Crops most seriously nipped by frost this morning may suffer a little quality decline, but there should not be any notable production cut. Very little second season corn is produced in the region, but there is some. There is also some rice and soybean production in the region.
Temperatures will be below average again Saturday morning with frost expected once again in nearly the same region, although the coolest conditions may sift a little further north and the area impacted will shrink in size. There is no chance that this cool air will reach into any key grain or oilseed production region and coffee production areas in northern Londrina will also not be impacted by much more than some low temperatures in the upper single digits Celsius. The cold airmass will abate Sunday and Monday, but temperatures in southeastern and east-central Brazil may continue milder than usual for a while.
