Tropical Storm Nanmadol Poses Minor Threat to Japan

Kansas City, July 2 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Nanmadol was located near the southwestern most Ryukyu Islands of Japan late Sunday. The storm was expected to curve through the East China Sea and impact northern Kyushu and central Honshu late Monday and Tuesday before emerging over the western North Pacific Ocean to the east of Honshu late Tuesday. The storm poses little risk to crops in Japan because of its relatively weak intensity and small size. 
At 2100 GMT Sunday, the center of the tropical storm was located 232 miles west southwest of Okinawa, Japan at 25.5 north, 124.1 east. Movement was north northwesterly at 15 mph and maximum sustained wind speeds were reaching close to 52 mph. Tropical storm force wind was occurring out 40 miles from the center of the storm.
Nanmadol will intensify additionally overnight tonight and by 1200 GMT Monday it will be producing a sustained wind speed of near 63 mph. The storm will curve to the northeast Monday and reach the northern coast of Kyushu, Japan by 0001 GMT Tuesday. The storm will have begun to weaken when it reaches Kyushu and additional weakening will occur Tuesday into Wednesday as the storm races across Honshu.
Wind speeds in rice and sugarcane areas will rarely be more than 45 mph. The storm’s small size and quick movement will minimize rainfall, although a few areas will receive 2.00 to 5.00 inches resulting in a little local flooding. Flooding will be brief and it should not be much of a problem with the system already back over open water by mid-week. Weather conditions will improve Wednesday as the storm moves far to the east of Japan. Very little, if any, crop damage will evolve as a result of this storm system.
